Director biography.

Clare Sturges is a BAFTA-winning screen director whose cinematic storytelling brings clarity and beauty to complex emotional worlds. Rooted in lived experience, her work often explores themes of survival, grief and the enduring presence of nature.

Clare is drawn to stories that leave a mark – vivid, urgent and often shaped by the resilience of the human spirit. She is known for her emotionally resonant storytelling, where intimate lives are rendered with cinematic scope through striking visual composition, textured sound and a sensitivity to both human and natural landscapes.

Her latest film, Surviving The Tunisia Beach Attack, is an Amazon Original feature documentary that premiered in May 2025 and reached No.4 on Prime Video UK. Crafted with the intensity of a psychological thriller, the film brings survivors’ voices to the fore with sensitivity and cinematic scale.

Clare was the first woman to win the BAFTA Cymru Breakthrough Award for Sexwork, Love & Mr Right – a quietly radical film that reframes sexwork through the lens of love, autonomy and dignity. Her second BAFTA Cymru came for My Brief Eternity, a poetic and deeply personal exploration of life, creativity and hope in the face of terminal cancer. The film celebrates the healing power of art and was longlisted for both the BIFA and EE BAFTA short film awards.

She brings the same visual flair to her broadcast work: from the lyrical character portrait Charlie Mackesy: The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, The Horse and Me (Apple TV+ / BBC), nominated for a 2023 BAFTA Cymru Factual Director Award, to The Arborist, a visually arresting short drama nominated for a BAFTA Cymru in 2020.

Equally at home in documentary or drama, Clare is driven by a commitment to emotional depth, visual poetry and the exploration of human connection. She approaches every project with a blend of sensitivity and cinematic craft, aiming to create stories that resonate deeply and stay with audiences. She is an Associate Member of BAFTA and a member of Directors UK.
